The new Line 4 of the Athens Metro in Greece, Section A: Alsos Veikou – Goudi, is currently at tender stage and comprises a 12,8 km long stretch with 10km long double track TBM tunnel, 15 underground stations, 9 shafts, 2 stabling facilities and a 840m long NATM connecting tunnel with the existing network. Having recognized the importance and benefits of risk engineering management to be applied as early as possible on the project life cycle when major decisions such as choice of alignment, selection of construction methods and configuration of the main structures have to be taken, the management of Attiko Metro SA which is the governmental entity responsible for developing and managing the project, engaged Ruler Consult to carry out a comprehensive risk engineering management study prior to its tender stage.
The main objectives of the study were to
- Identify and assess the main hazards and high-risk elements of the project
- Develop risk mitigation strategies that can be implemented in a timely manner in order to avoid cost overruns, delay risks as well as environmental and social/reputational risks.
- Provide recommendations on alternative conceptual configurations for the identified high-risk elements
- Identify opportunities for project optimization, and
- Provide recommendations for the Geotechnical Baseline Report
